When around 1939, a discarded oil drum here in Trinidad was used to fashion the only musical instrument invented in the 20th century, the steel band movement was born. It was also perhaps the first, most dramatic example ever of recycling material for a positive purpose.

The ingenuity and creativity of our people resonates with every note that today plays in these melodic musical instruments known as the steel pan.

As one of the first sponsors of the steel band many decades ago, Shell feels particularly proud today to take the
Story of the Oil Drum around the world so that everyone can learn how it became the sweet sound of the steel pan from Trinidad and Tobago.
